TEN

COLD FILLED THE AIR AS TALISE TRAILED down a hallway. The granite walls lost their sparkle at this time in the evening. It had taken her a few hours to decide her next moves. Wendy had been there to talk things through. Even Tempest offered valuable insight.

Talise knew what needed to be done. Now, she just had to do it.

Her heart leapt every time she glanced into a new room from the hallway. Most of these doorways led to sitting rooms where soldiers could talk and rest with one another. She never found the face she wanted to see, but eventually she did find the person she was looking for.

Claye.

She would have gone to Aaden first. In fact, she had gone to him first. But despite spending far too long searching, she hadn’t been able to find him anywhere after the meeting. She strongly suspected he wasn’t even inside the base anymore, but where else could he have gone?

Claye lounged on a plushy chair, grinning at the Forces board in front of him. Fyra sat across from him, biting her thumbnail. When he reached forward and moved one of the tablets, a giggle burst from her lips.

“I bet you weren’t expecting that, were you?” he drawled.

Fyra’s giggle turned into a snort, which only deepened the smile on Claye’s face. Just when their grins looked ready to split their faces, Claye sat up with a start.

“Talise.” He swallowed and sat up even straighter still. “Hi.”

A bright red shade filled Fyra’s cheeks. She jumped to her feet and gave an awkward bow. “I should probably get back to training.” Her voice came out in a quiet squeak. As soon as the words left her lips, she shuffled out of the room.

When Talise sat down across from Claye, he tugged at his collar. Her eyes narrowed at the Forces board for a moment before she glanced toward the doorway where Fyra had just disappeared.

Her gaze turned back to Claye. Now red splotches broke out across his face. Talise raised an eyebrow. “Have you two been spending a lot of time together?”

“No.” He squirmed. “Maybe.” Two fingers tugged at his collar once more. He offered a guilty frown when he looked into her eyes. “I would spend time with you if you…”

“No.” Even as he trailed off, Talise responded with ease. She even managed a smile that held no amount of spite or jealousy. “I’m glad. I like Fyra.” She let out quiet chuckle as her eyes found the Forces board once more. “But it seems like you know her a lot better than I do.”

The smirk that filled his face looked as Claye-like as ever. For the first time since leaving the palace, things felt natural with him. Finally.

He leaned forward. Genuine concern glowed in his eyes, showing how much he did care for her, even if it wasn’t in a romantic way. “You’re not mad?”

“No.” She gave a quick shake of her head before dropping her hands into her lap. “But I do need to ask you about something important.
